Technology Studies

Technology is the process by which people use knowledge, skills, materials and systems to solve problems and turn their concept ideas into workable solutions.

At Blackfriars Priory School, students are introduced to a range of technologies, materials and systems that provide an opportunity for students to experience and develop kinesthetic skills.

Energy Systems Unit

This unit aims to raise students awareness of their own energy consumption and the future responsibilities they have to conserve energy. As part of Year 9 Technology Studies, students are required to investigate a range of energy systems and emerging alternative technologies.

They are also required to consider home energy use and complete a survey identifying how they can make individual savings in their own home environment in an effort to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy use.

Students are then required to investigate, design and make a model of an energy efficient house or energy system.

Find out how much energy you use at home with the online energy efficiency calculator at www.originenergy.com.au/efficiency  Complete the questionnaire and print out a summary of your energy use. Look at the pie chart to determine which area of your home uses the most energy. List the ways in which energy use could be reduced.

Repeat this task when you have actively worked out methods to reduce your energy consumption. View and print a copy of the summary to see what difference it could make over each year! Compare it with the original calculations. In which area have you improved the most? Explain why this is the case.

There are many other sites that can help you to investigate energy sources and other related topics such as the Kyoto Protocol. Try some of the following sites to assist in your research:

Timber Technology Unit

Offered as a 1 or 2 unit subject. This course introduces students to the Timber Machining Processes. There is an emphasis on general and machine safety whilst students familiarize themselves with both hand held and static machines. Ideally students will complete unit 1 as a pre-requisite to unit 2, where students cover similar processes but deal with more complex applications.

Digital Photography (Stage 1)

This is a Stage 1 SACE semester unit which aims to introduce students to digital photography. A series of formative work and skills tasks are completed using Photoshop Elements. Students develop skills in capturing, importing and editing images. Manipulation techniques and filters are explored giving students the knowledge and confidence to complete the main summative tasks.

Energy Technology (Stage 1)

Energy Technology is a semester course which is an introduction to Stage 2 Automotive Technology. This program is concerned with the principles of operation of internal combustion engines, power transmissions and the practical skills associated with working on them.

Furniture Construction (Stage 1)

This course is an introduction to a range of machining processes that are fundamental to many technical occupations. The main focus is on knowledge and understanding, whilst still placing importance on design, practical skills, social safety and technological issues.

Creative Photography (Stage 2)

This 2 unit course develops students skills, knowledge and understanding specifically in the area of digital photography. Following a series of formative tasks to develop skills using Photoshop Elements, students are required to complete 4 major summative tasks using their own images. Tasks include photographic restoration, applying a range of  filters and incorporating their own images into practical applications. There is a strong emphasis on using aspects of design to link final outcomes. Issues and impacts of this technology on society are also examined.

Automotive Technology

This subject enables students to develop knowledge of, understanding and skills relating to automotive technology. Hands-on learning activities include designing and problem solving, making, developing, servicing, testing, and experimenting. Students learn to appraise the outcomes of their work, and to be aware of the social impact of technology. The learning activities enable students to work individually or in a group, and encourage students to be resourceful, creative, and enterprising.
