international STUDENT PROFILE

For many at Blackfriars, the PYP is a new perspective on learning. But just what is it? Let’s begin by focussing on the “International Student Profile”.

One of the principal goals of the IBPYP is to develop in students the capacity to function as caring and responsible international citizens. From the PYP’s perspective, this means that students develop particular attributes and dispositions. The International Student Profiles that IBPYP schools deliberately seek to promote are outlined below.

PYP students are:

INQUIRERS - That is, they value curiosity and have acquired the skills necessary to conduct purposeful, constructive research. They actively enjoy learning.

THINKERS – They employ a range of thinking skills critically and creatively to make sound decisions and solve complex problems.

COMMUNICATORS – They receive and express ideas and information confidently. They can communicate in more than one language including mathematical and visual symbols.

RISK-TAKERS – They approach unfamiliar situations without anxiety and have the confidence and spirit to explore positive new roles, ideas and strategies.

KNOWLEDGEABLE – They explore themes which are of global relevance and in so doing acquire a critical mass of significant knowledge.

PRINCIPLED – They have a sound grasp of moral reasoning. They have integrity, honesty and a sense of fairness and justice.

CARING – They show sensitivity towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a sense of personal commitment to action and service.

OPEN-MINDED – They respect the views, values and traditions of other individuals and cultures and are accustomed to seeking and considering a range of points of view.

WELL-BALANCED – They understand the importance of physical and mental balance and personal well-being.

REFLECTIVE – They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and analyse their personal strengths and weaknesses in a constructive manner.

It’s great to hear some of our students already beginning to identifying these characteristics in each other when they say things like : “I think Michael was being a Risk-taker when he had a go at that question” or “Patrick was being an Inquirer when he emailed his questions to the artist, Pro Hart.”

Parents of PYP students at Blackfriars should talk to their boys about what they understand to be the characteristics of a PYP international student. Find ways to use the terms: Inquirer, Thinker, Communicator, Risk-taker, Open-minded,etc. See if you can catch your boys developing these attributes. Ask how can parents help them to do so? When do parents or teachers model these attributes?
