Studies in the area of social sciences involve students in an awareness of the world around them, developing skills that help them to clarify their values, and enable them to become informed citizens, understanding issues of social justice and examining, local, national and global issues.

LOWER SECONDARY

In Years 7, 8 and 9 the Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) is a Core subject, which introduces students to the subjects of History, Geography and Civics, through various topics eg. The study of Weather, Ancient Societies, Australian Citizenship, Mapping, Antarctica, Early Australian History.

In Year 10, there is a choice of Semester subjects in History and Geography. The STRANDS of study are:

  • Time, Continuity and Change

  • Place and Space

  • Culture

  • Resources

  • Natural and Social Systems

In History we look at 20th Century with the World Wars being the focus.  In Geography we concentrate on Natural Disasters.

UPPER SECONDARY

In Year 11 there is a compulsory unit of Australian Studies which aims to give a background to our heritage and an understanding of contemporary society, as part of Stage 1 SACE. There is also a number of new subjects for students to experience, apart from the areas that they are familiar with in Geography and History. Tourism is available to students who may be interested in this area for future employment. Courses in Accounting, Legal Studies, and Economics are also offered at this level for students who may want to pursue further studies in these areas.

In Year 12 (SACE Stage 2) there is a wide choice of subjects which are the culmination of studies in this area. They are:

  • Modern History

  • Geography

  • Legal Studies

  • Economics

  • Accounting

  • Studies of Society

  • Business Studies
