information technology

The Information Technology Department aims to provide our students with the knowledge and skills to be confident, creative and productive users of information and communication technologies. Students can then competently apply these skills to the other Curriculum Learning Areas offered at Blackfriars.

Our programmes offer a structured and integrated approach to the teaching of skills and knowledge that are so important to the graduates of today. Through their studies, students develop and use operational knowledge and skills of commercially available software to:

  • Design and construct a variety of texts and products

  • Search for and sort information

  • Communicate with others using technology

Year 7, 8 & 9

At Year 7, 8 and 9 our programme is integrated with the delivery of Studies of Society & Environment. In this context, students are required to research using Internet Search techniques, critically design and construct text and develop products that meet specified requirements. Students are exposed to and familiarized with Internet, word processing, spreadsheets and charting, geographical information systems, presentation and desktop publishing software.

Year 10

At Year 10, students choose from the subjects of Information Technology, Flash Animation, Programming and Web Authoring.

Information Technology allows students to further consolidate and build on their knowledge and skills of Information and Communication Technologies using online learning media and work towards Certificate 1 in Information Technology.

Flash Animation introduces students to the skills required to build an animation that can be published on the Internet.  Programming uses GameMaker to introduce the concepts of programming through a graphical interface.  Web Authoring introduces students to the various forms of media that can be developed and integrated into an interactive, media-rich website.

Senior Studies

As part of their SACE studies, senior students have an opportunity to select Information Technology Systems at the Stage 1 level, and a further choice of Information Technology Systems or Information Technology Studies at Stage 2. All senior students study the core topics of Information Systems and Communication & Computer Systems. Dependent on their Stage 2 subject choice, students may study the following topics: Relational Databases, Application Programming,  Web Programming and Multimedia Programming.

Facilities

The School has 6 computer rooms (5 in the Secondary school and 1 in the Primary school) plus a suite of computers in the Senior Library.

Each computer room has a specific focus, with 2 rooms specifically dedicated to studies of Information Technology. All computers are connected to a campus-wide local area network, which has a high-speed connection to the Internet.
