ENGLISH

The teaching and learning of English at Blackfriars aims to improve students’ skills in language usage and heighten students interest in literature.

The real strength of Blackfriars is that we are able to organise and deliver curriculum that suits the particular learning needs of boys. Through selecting appropriate texts (novels, plays, short stories, poetry and films) and employing a variety of learning styles, boys are encouraged to become more responsive and proficient in their reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Junior Secondary

A key focus of the English program at Year 8 and 9 is the extensive Reading Program. We have invested much time in making accessible a wide range of contemporary fiction and non-fiction texts to provide students with as much choice as possible to be encouraged as readers. Weekly lessons are prioritised to support the reading program and a rewards scheme encourages participation!

A key emphasis is also placed upon language development. In addition to usual lessons, classes undertake regular grammar homework to consolidate language skills taught in class. Extra support can be provided by an ESL teacher for students whose home language is not only English, but also through the Adaptive Education team for students with diagnosed learning difficulties.

senior secondary

During Year 10, students will need to give consideration to what form of English they will undertake until at least Stage One (English is a compulsory subject until the end of Year 11). Students will either move into the more traditional English Studies or undertake work in English Communications, which has a greater focus on more modern forms of communication.

ESL becomes a subject in its own right in Stage One and has proved a popular choice for students where English is not the only language used in daily home life.

English is a vibrant and dynamic subject! It is vital in terms of developing students as articulate individuals who can think logically and write accurately. Whether it be in regular lessons, producing work for competitions, attending films and performances or listening to authors and other guest speakers, students are presented with many opportunities to not only learn vital literacy skills, but to develop a love of reading which lasts a lifetime.
