Blackfriars is a diverse, multicultural school and for more than 15 years has been welcoming students from across the globe who wish to study in Australia. Our international students have achieved outstanding results and gone on to confidently pursue university and tertiary studies.
Blackfriars offers both long and short-term homestay programs hosting students from China, Hong Kong, South Korea, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, Cambodia, Nepal, Vietnam, Thailand and Japan, as well as from across Europe.
Our International program adds an extra dimension to life at Blackfriars enabling local and international students to think beyond boundaries, form lasting global friendships and develop an informed perspective of the world.
We have modern facilities, a strong academic curriculum and a lively program of sport, music, drama and art. Our class sizes are limited and our teachers are friendly, professional and highly qualified.
The Blackfriars curriculum is based on the Australian Curriculum and the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). South Australian qualifications are accepted worldwide. At senior secondary level, choices are made about subjects to suit a range of career pathways. Teachers provide advice about programs and pastoral care support for all students. Teachers of English as an Additional Language (EAL) give extra help to international students, complementing the support offered by our International Student Liaison Officer.
We celebrate significant festivals and cultural events with our international students and after school sports and other activities are available to broaden students’ experiences.
Homestay families are carefully selected by the Homestay Coordinator to ensure they provide a quality, caring environment for International students during their stay in Adelaide.
Homestay fees include full board, breakfast, provision for lunch, evening meal and laundry.
The Homestay Program allows students to be fully immersed in the culture of an Australian family, providing an opportunity to establish positive and rewarding relationships. Students are actively encouraged to involve themselves in family life, which also assists their English language development.
South Australia is home to six leading universities and is the only Australian state to have all its public universities listed in one or more of the three major international rankings.
The three public universities, Flinders University, the University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, consistently rate highly in international rankings and student satisfaction surveys.
Adelaide is also home to Carnegie Mellon University, Australia’s first and only international university, as well as CQUniversity’s Adelaide campus and research hub, and Torrens University Australia, the first new university established in Australia in more than 20 years.
The six universities have created and reinforced Adelaide’s reputation as a true education hub.
All students enrolled at Blackfriars in Year 11 and Year 12 undertake a two year certificate of study - the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). Completion of the SACE is a pre-requisite for entry to university, as well as a number of other post-secondary school options. The SACE is internationally recognised and accepted for entry to universities in many countries, including the USA, UK and Canada.
Since 1953, Blackfriars’ students have been successful in entering a broad range of tertiary courses including Engineering, Law, Arts, Medicine, Science, Commerce, Marketing and International Studies. Graduates of Australian universities are highly regarded throughout the world, as are the state and national standards of education that provide entry to the university sector.
