Policy & Procedures

Blackfriars aims to engender a respect for others, nurture an understanding of personal responsibility and self-discipline, while providing an environment that allows students to reach their full potential. Policies and procedures have been developed and implemented by Blackfriars to achieve these aims.

School policies at Blackfriars are approved by the School Board.  Each policy is reviewed and updated over a three year cycle, with modifications to existing documents undertaken as they occur.

Procedures for students are also included in the Student Diary. The following are excerpts from these documents:

    The School Day

The first bell rings at 8.35 am, for students to attend the Home Group period which commences at 8.40 am. On every second Wednesdays the school gathers for Assembly in the gymnasium or for year level meetings during lesson 1.

Students are expected to be punctual out of respect for other members of the class and community. Students who are not in attendance by 8.40am are to report to the Student Office on arrival and sign the 'Late book' to indicate their attendance. If a student is habitually late, the Home Group teacher will contact the parent/guardian.

After Home Group, two 50-minute morning lessons are scheduled followed by recess (10.45 am - 11.05 am), two lessons then lunch (12.50 pm - 1.35pm) and two afternoon lessons before dismissal.

Dismissal for Secondary classes is 3.20 pm, while Primary classes are dismissed at 3.10 pm (3.00 pm on a Tuesday). No class will be dismissed before the final bell.

Parents and Guardians need to be aware that the school provides supervision of students on School premises from 8.20 am onwards, and in the afternoons up until 3.45 pm. Parents and Guardians who send their children to school outside these hours should recognise that they are unsupervised and should take steps to insure them against accidental injury. Students participating in recognised activities out of hours, such as, sport, detention or other practices will be supervised.

Further details can be obtained from the Parent/Student Information Booklet available from the Registrar.

    Students who are Absent

In the case of student absence, parent/guardian cooperation is required in notifying the school by phone in the first instance. In addition, an Absentee Note is to be completed in the diary. The Note must be shown to the student's Home Group Teacher the day of the student's return to school.

    Late Arrival / Early Leaver

When a student arrives late to school or they are required to leave early, they should report to the Student Office with a completed Early Leaver or Late Arrival Note. These notes appear in the back of the diary.

    Uniform and Appearance

The full and proper uniform is to be worn at school and when students are traveling to and from school. Click Here for details on the school uniform.

    Homework

The time a student spends on study each night depends upon his year level. The following is a guide.

        Year Level   Recommended time
        Primary   ½- ¾ hour
        Years 7 & 8   1 hour
        Years 9   1 ½ hours
        Year 10   2 hours
        Years 11   2 ½ hours
        Years 12   3 hours

Some extra time should be spent over the weekend.

Homework should not be considered only as written work. When no written work is set for a particular night or subject, students should spend home study in reading, reviewing and extending the week's work.

    Co-Curricular Involvement

Students are expected to participate to the best of their ability in at least one appropriate co-curricular activity each year. This is generally a minimum commitment of two terms. Co-curricular activity other than sport, can take the form of active community service, school bands, drama productions, debating, Mock Trial, or assistance in the school's sport programme, such as umpiring. In the instance of sport, the activity chosen as a summer sport in Term 1 is to be continued in Term 4. A winter sport is played during Term 2 and 3. More details can be obtained from the Parent/Student Information Booklet 2006 or co-curricular web page.
