curriculum

As a school specialising in Boys' education, Blackfriars presents a consolidated and coherent curriculum framework.  Implicit to curriculum design and delivery are the principles that underpin the Curriculum Policy:

  • The primacy of God and respect for the teachings of Jesus Christ in the Gospels;

  • The pursuit of truth through the complementary functions of faith and intelligence;

  • The interplay between study, commitment to excellence and prayer;

  • The encouragement to learn individually and collaboratively, to think creatively and critically and communicate effectively;

  • A spirit of community, that both contributes to the development of and is enriched by each student;

  • An education for boys that meets their specific needs while preparing them to participate in an ever changing world;

  • An inclusive curriculum, accessible to each student, that allows for different learning styles and abilities, and one which is responsive to the needs of the poor and disadvantaged;

  • A broad and contemporary curriculum that reflects principles of best practice in design, delivery and evaluation;

  • The priority of literacy and numeracy as fundamentals of learning in curriculum delivery

These are given specific expression in the teaching and learning process, whether in the Primary school or in the Senior Secondary.

A broad and holistic education that speaks to the academic, spiritual, physical, ethical and creative development of each student, cognisant of boys learning styles, is delivered at Blackfriars.

The curriculum framework in the Primary school is in a stage of transition.  Having recently registered with the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) office in Singapore, Blackfriars has been given 'candidature' status to adopt the principles of international education through the Primary Years Program (PYP).  Through progressive adoption of the curriculum and teaching methodologies of the PYP, it is intended that Blackfriars will be a fully authorised provider of the program in 2006.

The secondary school offers a broad selection of subjects, as well as, offering programs in Vocational and Education Training (VET) subjects such as wine grape growing, hospitality, music industry and automotive technology.
