the primary (YEARS 3 - 6) curriculum

The curriculum between Years 3 - 6 continues the development of the total person through spiritual, academic, physical and social development and follows the holistic view of the Dominican philosophy.

The school ethos is based on gospel values with an emphasis on community development where boys, parents and teachers interact to make the formative years fruitful and enriching.

It is important for the students to realise their potential in all fields of endeavour and to do so in a co-operative and Christian manner.

Religious Education is an integral component of the curriculum and focuses on recognising, celebrating and seeking God's loving presence. Family Life Education is integrated with the curriculum and aims to develop responsible and healthy attitudes. The school's Sacramental program includes preparation for Reconciliation, Holy Communion and Confirmation.

The Primary School curriculum is progressively working towards the adoption of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) which is planned for fully authorised delivery in 2006.  This inquiry driven program is supported by special events and co-curricular activities.  For more information, click on the PYP link at left.

Class teachers place a strong emphasis on the attainment of literacy and numeracy skills. Specialist teachers teach Physical Education, Music and Japanese.

Personal development is enhanced through numerous activities such as swimming lessons, excursions and school camps. Involvement in special events, such as Grandparents Day and Book Week, promote opportunities for broad learning experiences.

Extra learning support is provided to students experiencing difficulty with literacy or numeracy; while students who demonstrate above average capability are catered for through various enrichment programs. The Learning Assistance Program assists students who need attention in the areas of confidence, self-esteem and social skills.

Co-curricular sporting activities include tennis, cricket, basketball, soccer, football, volleyball, cross-country and water polo and are offered to students from Year 5 and 6. Non-sporting co-curricular activities include choir, band, chess, debating, public speaking and poetry recital and are offered to Years 4 to 6.
